A Congolese Story

About this event
Ndogi means dream in Vivien’s native Congolese language, Ladi. The performance is a true Congolese story choreographed by Vivien Bassouamina, diaspora artist of the Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center. He brings diaspora artists to share humanity through a story of finding the light in the darkness. Featuring Woté Rufine, Shawn Merriman Roberts, Lamine Bangoura, Elie Mabanza and Ibu Ngom.

Vivien Bassouamina

Vivien Bassouamina was born in Brazzaville, Congo where he was the lead choreographer for five different dance companies, one of which led to an international tour and brought him to San Francisco. He created a dance form called “tradi-modern,” a fusion of traditional Congolese dance with modern and contemporary dance. He currently teaches in Santa Cruz, CA and is a member of the Diaspora Performance Project under the auspices of the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center.

Woté Rufine Havard Duclos

Woté Rufine Havard Duclos, originally from Brazzaville, Congo, and now resides in Nantes France where she teaches dance and fitness and choreographs for several dance companies. Woté Rufine Havard Duclos, originally from Brazzaville, Congo, and now resides in Nantes France where she teaches dance and fitness and choreographs for several dance companies.

Shawn Merriman-Roberts

Shawn Merriman-Roberts was born in the United States. Shawn began dancing with Blanch Brown in 1994, shortly thereafter, he joined her Haitain dance company, Petit Le Croix and  performed from 1996-2003. Since 2010, he has been teaching Afro-Haitain dance at Santa Clara University every even year. He currently teaches Afro-Haitain at the Tannnery World Dance and Cultural Center, and is a participant in the Diaspora Performance project. 

Elie Mabanza

Elie Mabanza, a master guitarist, born in Brazzaville, Congo  where he began playing guitar at the age of 8. He currently plays guitar in three local bands. His instrumental precision invites one’s inner being to relax and open to the beauty and intricacies of life.

Ibu Ngom

Ibu Ngom, originally from Dakar, Senegal is a master musician and dancer. He plays diverse percussive instruments from several African traditions and brings forth great happiness through his music. He drums in a local Brazilian fusion band Sambada and for many African dance classes in both the bay area and in Santa Cruz.

Mohamed Lamine Bangoura

Mohamed Lamine Bangoura, from Conakry, Guinea, is a master percussive musician. He is the artistic director of both Sogue Percussion and Dance and Jaara Dance Company. His musical expertise transverses several African traditions and he consistently shares his love and deep joy for life every time he plays.
